Blowing Up a Balloon with a Lemon
Put chemistry to work for you!
- juice of 1 lemon or 2 oz. of vinegar
- a balloon
- an empty soda bottle
- 1 oz. water (30 ml)
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda (5 ml)
What to do:
Stretch the balloon to make the rubber easier to inflate. Dissolve the teaspoon of baking soda in an ounce of water in the clean, empty soda bottle. Then stir in the juice of a lemon or two ounces of vinegar. Quickly fit the stretched balloon over the mouth of the bottle.
The balloon inflates.
When you mix the base (the baking soda) and the acid (the lemon or vinegar), you create carbon dioxide, a gas that rises into the balloon and blows it up.
Be careful not to get the lemon juice or vinegar in your eyes, it will burn.
